Portia Moyo’s transformation began when she joined a Self-Help Group, where women save together and lend to strengthen each other’s livelihoods. As one of ten women who received US$100 from a revolving fund, she expanded her chicken business, kept goats and bought a refrigerator — and, in time, built a diamond-mesh fence and a furnished extension with an IBR roof.
The change went beyond finances. Through Gender Action Learning System (GALS) and Gender-Based Violence prevention training, Portia gained the confidence to promote equality at home. She and her husband — now back from working in South Africa — make financial decisions jointly and run their businesses together.
Portia now serves as a Community Health Worker, and her business has become a safe space where women discuss health, empowerment and the challenges in their lives. Additionally, her activities as a community facilitator for the SHGs, amongst others, have gained the recognition of the local Chief Ngwemnyama Fuyana. She now sits at the chief’s council, helping to deliberate cases and issues that arise within their community. This has afforded her the rare opportunity to act as an advocate for her fellow women and influence decisions that will empower women.
Having experienced the impact of financial empowerment and training herself, Portia now mentors other girls and young women toward their own dreams.
